How to find customers for AI software
Do not begin with everyone who could use AI. Begin with the people already paying—in time, errors, labor, or risk—for the workflow your product changes.
Start with the workaround, not the model
The best early customer signal is a repeated, painful workaround: copying data between systems, preparing the same report every week, manually checking compliance evidence, or coordinating work through email and spreadsheets. The model architecture matters later; the existing behavior reveals urgency now.
Build a buyer evidence sheet
Record the buyer’s role, company type, triggering event, current tool, cost of the problem, reason they might change, and who approves a purchase. Label every statement as observed, reported by a customer, or inferred. This prevents polished positioning from outrunning the evidence.
Look for concentrated trust
Instead of assembling a huge lead list, identify organizations that already aggregate the buyer: associations, consultants, managed-service providers, resellers, wholesalers, franchise groups, and specialist media. One credible channel can create more qualified conversations than hundreds of generic impressions.
Ask for a pilot, not belief
Define a small test with representative inputs, a success metric, a time boundary, named owners, and a stop condition. A pilot should answer whether the workflow improves—not whether the buyer is excited by an AI demonstration.
Use outreach as research
Early outreach should test the buyer definition and problem, not automate persuasion at scale. Ask what happens today, what failure costs, and what would have to be true to try a new product. Track conversations and downstream actions rather than post counts or email volume.
When to use a distributor
A human distributor is useful when the product is functional but the builder lacks buyer access, category credibility, regional context, or sustained sales capacity. The distributor should contribute a real channel—not merely lend a name or payment account.
Assisted handoff
Replying with a URL can be enough to start.
Give MEGA(niche) the product URL, intended buyer, painful workaround, and owner authorization. We can help structure the remaining handoff for private review.
